Mastering Your Mindset: It’s Not About Being Positive All the Time

Hey there. If someone has ever told you to stay positive 100% of the time, they weren’t being honest with you. No one is positive all the time. We all have moments, days, or even weeks when intrusive thoughts take over, and that’s okay. What matters isn’t being positive every moment—it’s how we navigate those moments when our mindset isn’t where we want it to be.

Improving your mindset starts with understanding where you are right now. If the same situation happened to you ten times, how would you react? Could you shift your perspective and recalibrate to a more positive outlook? The key is to define what your ideal headspace looks like and work toward it—not someone else’s definition of positivity, but your own.

Years ago, I ran a project called Positivity Ninjas on Instagram. I’d encourage people to tag someone they thought was positive, and while the response was inspiring, the behind-the-scenes messages were revealing. People who were tagged often messaged me saying they didn’t see themselves as positive at all. This experience reinforced something important: we’re all working on our mindset individually, and comparison only makes the process harder.

Nobody is positive all the time. Even the most optimistic people experience self-doubt or tough moments. That’s why it’s critical to give yourself grace during those times. For me, I aim for positivity about 85% of the time—not as a hard rule, but as a reminder that it’s okay to have down moments.

Sometimes, being in a less-than-ideal headspace is exactly what you need in that moment. It’s a chance to process, recalibrate, and figure out how to move forward. Over time, your ability to shift back to the mindset you want will improve, but it’s not about perfection. It’s about progress.
